About José Galván
José is a five-year-old boy who lives in rural Immokalee, Florida. For the most part, he is a normal child who gets along well with his peers and loves Spiderman, playing with Legos, and watching cartoons.
Despite hard-working and dedicated parents—his father, an agricultural worker who spends long days in the fields and a mother who devotes every day attending to José’s physical and emotional needs—José will soon start school with a serious disadvantage.
Born prematurely, he suffered an infection that left him completely hearing impaired. José’s parents do not know sign language and helping José with his school lessons will be nearly impossible. In order for José to keep up with his peers, he will need to sustain home support.
